JAMES J. TIERNEY

James J. Tierney is a children’s author whose storytelling is shaped by warmth, imagination, family, and a lifelong appreciation for meaningful words. Born on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, on July 5, 1948, Jim’s life has been filled with experiences that helped form his gentle yet thoughtful writing style. His stories carry a sense of humor, heart, and wonder, creating books that children can enjoy while also giving parents and grandparents something meaningful to share aloud.

Jim attended Visitation Grade School and later Quigley Preparatory Seminary South before earning his B.A. from Maryknoll College in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, in 1970. He then entered the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam from 1971 to 1972. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Chicago, where he married Marita Brace Tierney. Together, they welcomed three children: Jim, Jeannie, and Patrick. Family has remained one of the strongest influences in his life and continues to inspire the warmth, tenderness, and playful spirit found in his writing.

Before becoming a published children’s author, Jim built a long career rooted in service, responsibility, and care for others. He worked as a juvenile probation officer for Cook County until his retirement in 2002. While working, he also attended night school, earning a master’s degree from Chicago State University in 1977 and a law degree from John Marshall Law School in 1981. He was later admitted to the bar and has practiced law in Illinois. These experiences gave him a deep understanding of people, challenges, growth, and second chances—themes that naturally connect with the lessons often found in children’s stories.

Jim’s inspiration as a writer comes from everyday life, family moments, children’s curiosity, and the joy of creating characters that young readers can remember. As a father and grandfather, he understands how stories can bring families together, spark imagination, and gently teach important lessons. His writing style is playful and easy for children to follow, but it also carries messages about kindness, courage, belonging, friendship, and finding one’s own voice.

His first publication, Hereboy the Pup, introduces readers to a lovable little dog with a very unusual problem: he wants to bark like other dogs, but his voice keeps surprising everyone around him. Through humor, animal adventures, and heartfelt moments, the story reminds children that being different does not make someone bad and that everyone finds their voice in their own time. Jim continues to live in Chicago with his wife, Marita, and enjoys spending time with his 17 grandchildren across California, Michigan, and Chicago. He has also begun work on a second children’s story, continuing his journey of creating warm, imaginative stories for young readers and their families.
